AE Stevenson

Assistant Professor
Department of Cinema and Media Studies and the College

AE Stevenson’s research interests include Black feminist studies, Black studies, social media studies, horror, and Black women’s filmmaking history. She is currently working on a book manuscript in which, through an analysis of Vine, TikTok, Instagram’s The Shade Room, and “blackfishing,” she argues that Black women and girls have fundamentally changed the visual language of the internet.

Her work has been published in Feminist Media Histories and Catalyst.

Stevenson received an AB in art history from the University of Chicago, where she focused on African American art and media. She then earned an MA and PhD from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Theater, Film, and Television. While a doctoral candidate, she was awarded a Predoctoral Fellowship for Excellence through Diversity by the University of Pennsylvania, where she pursued research dedicated to furthering Black feminist epistemologies across the fields of Black studies, cinema and media studies, and philosophy. Most recently, she was an assistant professor of gender and sexuality studies at the University of Southern California.
