Valerie Press’s research interests include health literacy, health disparities, adolescent health, women’s health, and community outreach. Her current research projects focus on patient self-management education and health literacy in patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Her policy interests have led to her active involvement with the American College of Physicians, she currently serves as the Chair of the Council of Young Physicians for the Illinois Northern Chapter.

Representative publications include “Misuse of Respiratory Inhalers in Patients Hospitalized with Asthma or COPD, “ “The Chicago Breathe Project: A Regional Approach to Improving Education on Asthma Inhalers for Resident Physicians and Minority Patients,” “The Neighborhood Health Exchange: Developing a Community Partnership in Residency,” “Internal Medicine Residents’ Comfort with and Frequency of Providing Dietary Counseling to Diabetic Patients,” and “Teaching Health Policy to Residents—Three-Year Experience with a Multi-Specialty Curriculum.”

Press completed her Hospitalist Scholar Research Fellowship in 2010 and her residency in internal medicine–pediatrics in 2008 at the University of Chicago. She completed her MPH and MD at the University of Michigan in 2004 and her BS in cellular and molecular biology and women’s health from the University of Michigan in 1997.
