Ricardo Lastra’s scholarly interests include diagnostic gynecologic pathology and cytopathology. His research has primarily focused on evaluating the use of distinctive morphologic criteria, as well as the utility of immunohistochemical markers and molecular studies to best characterize lesions from the gynecologic tract, along with certain head and neck lesions.
He is the lead author of numerous journal articles, which have appeared in Pathology Case Reviews, Cytopathology, Cancer Cytopathology, Cytojournal, and Diagnostic Cytopathology. He has served as an editorial board member of Focus, a periodic publication of the Papanicolaou Society of Cytopathology.
Lastra graduated from the José María Vargas School of Medicine at the Universidad Central de Venezuela, in Caracas. He completed his residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at Pennsylvania Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania Health System, as well as surgical pathology and cytopathology fellowships at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and the Advanced Specialty Training Program in Gynecologic Pathology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Lastra is a recipient of the Crane Award for academic and research excellence from Pennsylvania Hospital.
