John Purakal is an emergency medicine physician with academic interests in cardiovascular disease, medical education, public health, and international medicine. He has worked in underserved communities throughout his training, domestically and abroad, with focus on educating at-risk populations on prevalent non-communicable diseases. Specific research interests include hypertension, congestive heart failure, health beliefs, and the rise of non-communicable diseases in developing nations.
His research findings have been published in the West Indian Medical Journal, the American Journal of Emergency Medicine, Circulation, and the Annals of Emergency Medicine.
Purakal received his MD from Wayne State University and completed his residency in emergency medicine at the University of Illinois, where he served as chief resident.
