Vladimir Liarski’s research interests are focused on the study of the role, cellular make-up, and processes that lead to inflammation. One of his current research projects is focused on elucidating the importance of interstitial inflammation in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus who are afflicted with nephritis. He created a novel image analysis and cell-distance quantitation method that brings together immunofluorescent confocal microscopy and computerized algorithms developed for reading digital mammograms and radiographs to determine specific cell-cell interactions within clinical samples of human tissue. This technique has revealed fundamental insights into pathophysiology and has provided important prognostic information. His other research interests include image analysis, machine learning, advanced microscopy techniques, bioinformatics, and immunology.
His findings have been published in Science Translational Medicine, Arthritis & Rheumatology, Nature Immunology, and Current Opinion in Rheumatology.
Liarski received an MD with honors in research in pathology from New York University and completed his residency at Emory University. He is a graduate of the University of Chicago’s rheumatology fellowship program and was an inaugural Coggeshall Fellow in the Department of Medicine.
